Best. Card. Evar.

So usually, I’m not a big fan of birthday cards. The people who write them can’t seem to get beyond the same 3 or 4 jokes, and it’s like you read the outside, pause for a moment, open the card, and oh boy! its the same joke.

But this birthday season… I got a special card. One not really trying to make a joke, well, sort of not trying. This card was from Mr. d10:

On the outside of the card, there’s an image of a black dude, showing just his lips, part of his shoulders, and collar, and then there’s a cloudy transparent overlay that reads…

This is you, Baby,
such a fine black man-
Who knows who he is
and knows where he stands.
Who doesn’t have time
to play any games,
Who’s earned my respect
and gives back the same.
Who gives of himself
to build up trust
And commits his heart
to big dreams for us.
Who can heat me up
and then love me down,
And within his arms,
all my joy is found…

—-
And then inside the card, it says:

This is you, Baby,
such a fine black man.
This is me loving you-
hard as I can.

Whew.

Just in case that was too long for you, here’s a summary: male, white friend gives male, white friend a card that has the words:

“such a fine black man”

and

Who can heat me up
and then love me down,

among other things.

One other thing: he read this card to me at house church, with his arm around my shoulder. We had a moment.

Best card ever. I totally saw you blush when he read “Love you down.”
