On: Memorization
In the greatly distant past, I discussed a superpower of mine, which was my ability to magically touch a malfunctioning computer, and it immediately operate properly, even if I did the exact same steps as the person who reported the problem computer to me. This is known as the Magic Touch ™. Yes, it’s trademarked. No, please don’t violate my trademark. Thx.
Anyway, I have a second superpower, or at least a power you might call “outlandish” or “peculiar”. It deals with the memorization of odd things. Odd things. Snippets of conversations long past, events that were trivial in importance, whatnot.
Above those things, however, is song lyrics. My brain is like a sponge for memorizing a song’s lyrics, such that I now know 90% of the pop songs made in the last 10 years, or at least close to it. It’s frightening, I hear a song maybe 2 or 3 times, and I’m starting to be able to play sing-along pretty well.
But this is disconcerting to me. If I can memorize songs so easily, why don’t I try and memorize the Bible (no, not the whole Bible, just parts of it)? That’s not to say I haven’t tried, I’ve done it alot in the past… but if my brain naturally can pwn such info, why not?
Especially when you consider all the references there are to keeping the Word close to your heart and brain, just skim Psalm 119 for some reference on that.
All this said, I feel quite convicted about my use of time in terms of what I hear. Yeah, I listen to alot of pop/rap/rock stuff, but I think this conviction would still occur if I listened to The Fish or J93 (the city’s two main Christian stations, meh). I mean, regardless of what station you listen to, its still filled with mindless talk and commercials for hours of the week.
All this to say, I invested in an audio bible. If you get an ESV one in mp3 CD format, you’re only looking at like 40 bucks, which is barely more expensive than a paper bible. Plus, some awesome emphatic dood reads it to you! It should be here on Friday.
Link to what I got, The Listener’s Complete Bible on MP3 CD (four discs), ESV
Link to the guy who reads it, reading either something in Matthew or in Joshua.
