The Most Holy 50% Rule
During the course of my marriage to the most-fabulous Heather, a rule of sorts has emerged, that can be a guide for your conversations:
As the percentage of teachers in a conversation approaches 50%, the chance that the conversation revolves around topics about teaching increases dramatically.
Now you may say to yourself, “well of course Eric, they have that in common, what else would they talk about?”… blah blah blah, I submit this is different. If nothing else, its a testament to the dedication teachers show toward their given trade.
Next time you hang out with some teachers (or “educators”, if it’s jb1), see if what I say is true. You’ll see.
I live in a family of teachers - I can strongly attest to this - and I agree that this is not run-of-the-mill, we-have-this-in-common kind of chat. This is we-are-almost-scarily-obsessive-about-our-chosen-proffession in depth-type discussion.
I-like-to-use-teh-dashes…and…the elipses…
My sisters a teacher so I know all about the 50% rule. Theres also a conversation content rule. Every time I talk with my sister about anything if the conversation lasts more than 10 minutes it will eventually converge on education, or the state of education today, or why her kids are (insert adjective here).
i know what you speak of. and i only see it once every now and then.
but of course when i get together with other militant, rash, young friends, all we do is rant about the church. and thats probably like a 95% rule.
abschicken.
oh yeah. i’m going to need your help sorting through all this complicated rss stuff again. i know you told me once but i can’t seem to figure it out on my own. i even read your tutorial above.
The funny part about the 50% educator rule is the people who try to resist the rule. Oh, they’re out there, but their resistance is futile! They make disrespectful remarks about teaching, they try to ignore our impassioned complaints, but they only fuel our fire to speak more and more, louder and louder, until the whole world is under our spell! HA HA HA!!!
(ahem)
I like ponies.
Peace
It makes sense that you would talk about what is happening in your life or what you spend most of your time doing. And since school usually completely consumes a teacher’s life, it’s just about the only thing we have to talk about. Plus, if you had 9 year olds yelling in your face and lying to your face 2 seconds after you saw them do whatever, I’d say it might make you want to tell someone the audacity these children have to say/do the things they do, especially if the person can understand or empathize. You know, I dare say that most people talk/complain about their day when a coworker or boss yells at them, degrades them, embarrasses them, or even is surprisingly great to them. But for most jobs, this is not the norm.
hmm………well, I guess thanks for reading my… rant about school stuff….
I wonder what I will be talking about in 3 months.
