On the topic of: Dance…Dance… Revolution.

I have been hesitant to post about this topic, despite the fact that it is near and dear to my heart. I wasn’t sure I could fully capture the essence of DDR in words. Nevertheless, I don’t think you can really understand this topic until you see me do it in person.

Anyway, let me try and make this more clear. In my free time, I enjoy playing a video game called Dance Dance Revolution. It is available in the arcade, on the PC, on the Xbox, and on the Playstation and PS2. I primarily play on the PS2. This game is not like other such video games, where you recline on your couch, and the workout is for your thumbs. This game has a specially made mat, approximately 4feet by 4 feet. On this mat, there are four arrows, Up, Down, Left and Right, arranged in a pattern like a “+” sign.

The game then plays dance music, and the four types of arrows scroll up the screen, and you have to step on the arrow on the mat that corresponds to what’s on the screen. It goes to the beat of the dance music, and everyone has a grand ole’ time.

Sounds simple, right? You just watch the screen, and press the arrows. Cake!

The problem is, as those who have witnessed it, they make the game scale in difficulty to a ridiculous degree. In other words, a 5 year old and a master of the game can play side-by-side, and both be challenged according to their skill.

Anyway, enough describing the game. I play this game alot. Like, an hour a day. It pwns me, it’s my workout, and it gives my brain a workout at the same time, forcing me to quickly compute patterns and feet movements. Let’s get to the good parts, though… Pictures!!!1

Here’s a picture from last night. That’s me on the left, and Ben on the right:

As you can see, we’re both having a jolly time. Let’s look at what happens next…

You may notice my mouth is open. Thats because I was talking to the photographer, Emma, saying, “thanks for letting me sweat on your floor, emmuh.”

While I was playing, here’s some choice quotes that were heard:

Ben: As many times as I’ve seen him do this, I can’t help but watch.

Josh: It’s like staring into a fire, its mesmerizing.

Anyway, I have alot of fun with it. And it keeps me skinny and my endurance sky-high. This is an entertaining thing, as I spend my days plunking on a keyboard, not running marathons.

Since we’re being so cultured today, talking about music, today’s funny link has to do with Handy Latin Phrases. Here’s an excerpt of my favorites:

(At a poetry reading)
Nullo metro compositum est.
It doesn’t rhyme.

Non curo. Si metrum non habet, non est poema.
I don’t care. If it doesn’t rhyme, it isn’t a poem.

(At a barbeque)
Animadvertistine, ubicumque stes, fumum recta in faciem ferri?
Ever noticed how wherever you stand, the smoke goes right into your face?

It should also be noted that Eric is reported to DDR in skimpy attire, aka nothing at all. I know most of you don’t want to know that, and while I am fortunate to never have witnessed this, I have been informed of it multiple times by the DDR master himself!

[...] Eric plays DDR. I’ve known this for quite some time. Now, there are pictures to prove it. Sunday night several of us got together at Emma’s house to just relax and be together. Eric and Josh Brown 1 both brought their DDR mats, and luckily Emma was able to catch some of the hot action on film. Eric has written a brief overview of his DDR passion on his site, so be sure to check that out. Yes, I am in one of the pictures. Yes, I am getting owned by Eric. Yes, I was on beginner and Eric was on advanced. Yes, Eric always collapses on the floor like that after every song. That’s how insane the ones he does are. [...]

[...] What we learned about Eric: We learned about Eric’s DDR addiction, and got to see some rare visual evidence of the fact. It also gives a basic overview of what DDR actually is, how I play, etc. [...]

[...] We’re gonna focus on the terms “deconstruction and reconstruction.” And we’re gonna try and apply it to something that is abit more abstract that theology or doctrine. We’re going to use Dance Dance Revolution, or simply “DDR.” If this is a new phrase to you, read this post first. [...]
